Take Shelter (Jeff Nichols)

In Take Shelter, Jeff Nichols puts us in Curtis’ shoes so that his standpoint is ours too and this while he spirals down to his rock bottom.  It was an uneasy ride, placing us in torturous disadvantage. As Curtis (Michael Shannon in a revelation performance!) starts to have nightmares, the film never lets up in flooding us with apocalyptic images that at one point we were not sure if what we were seeing onscreen was for real or just schizophrenia getting the better of him. Watch out for the storm shelter sequence where his wife, portrayed with heartbreaking immediacy by Jessica Chastain, tries to convince him to open the door because there is no more storm outside. It was surreal and effective and it elevated the film to a whole new level.
